Juan De Marcos González, the Quincy Jones of Cuba. The unsung hero, musical director and co-founder of the Buena Vista Social Club, and director of the Afro-Cuban All Stars brings his big-band back to Europe following the release of the second Afro-Cuban All Stars CD 'Distinto, Diferente'.

This year the 19-piece big band has a more modern sound and is harder-hitting than previously, playing the full range of Cuban styles from classic son through big band mambos and descargas to danzón, abakua and the contemporary groove of the timba. In 2000 and 2001 Juan de Marcos has been on tours to Europe, Latin America, Australia, Japan and the USA with the ACAS while also busy producing the solo CD by one of Cuba's great rumba singers Felix Baloy from the Afro-Cuban All Stars.

A toda Cuba le gusta * This all-star group is the dream of bandleader and arranger Juan De Marcos González, the unsung hero, arranger and co-founder of the 'Buena Vista Social Club' and former leader of Cuba¹s premier son band SIERRA MAESTRA.
The Afro-Cuban All Stars is a gathering of some of Cuba¹s finest young musicians - including Amadito Valdés on timbales and David Alfaro on piano - with star singers from the golden age of the 1950s and ¹60s and the present. These include, from the older generation, Caridad Hierrezuelo and Felix Baloy and from the younger, Pedro Calvo (Los Van Van and Felix Valdés Baloy jnr).

* Juan De Marcos¹ Afro-Cuban All Stars is an ever-changing project and 2001 sees the band evolve its personnel with the horn section now expanded to seven plus flute and performing a renewed set. The music continues with its tribute to the classic sound and arrangements of the past but blended with more recent elements from the continuing development of the Cuban music story.
