Enfant de Cuba
D'Rivera a été séduit très tôt par les images et les sons du Brésil, après avoir admiré des forêts tropicales, des défilés de carnaval et des écoles de samba au cinéma local. Sa carrière musicale l'a amené à jouer aux côtés de pointures de la scène brésilienne comme le trompettiste Claudio Roditi ou les chanteurs Rosa Pasos et Leny Andrade.

Dizzy Gillespie
1977 Rencontre de Paquito et de Dizzy Gillespie en visite à La Havane. Les conséquences de cette rencontre sont multiples pour le Jazz cubain. Concernant D'Rivera, il sert de déclencheur à sa sortie de Cuba trois ans plus tard. Paquito veut jouer du jazz mais cette musique se joue à New York. il va alors créer sa formation le "HAVANA / NEW YORK ENSEMBLE ".
